It was reported here that Ben Affleck was in the running for the directing gig the the live action, feature film version of The Justice League. Now it seems that he is not. In a chat with 24 Hours Vancouver, he had this to say:
“I’m not working on the Justice League. One of the problems with entertainment web sites is that they need to fill pages, and that’s how rumours get started.”
“Justice League sounds really exciting, but it’s not something I’m working on.”
I find this bit of news disheartening, but not surprising. I feel that Affleck has grown into a very good director who could do something special with Justice League. It seems that it is not to be . . .
In related news, hot on the heels of Affleck’s public denial comes word that the Wachowski’s (The Matrix, Speed Racer) are now in the mix for director(s). Moviehole is reporting that Lana (formerly Larry) and Andy Wachowski are on the short list for the directing gig. They are apparently jazzed by Cloud Atlas, the Wachowski’s and Tom Twyker’s (Run Lola Run, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer) upcoming sci-fi epic.
I am somewhat conflicted by this news. While I like the Wachowski’s work (and yes I mean all 3 Matrix films), I’m not sure how they would manage to make a huge tentpole comic book film. While they produced V for Vendetta, they didn’t actually direct. They also like to take their time. So, I guess we still know nothing and will see how this all shakes out in the end.
