Movie Ruminations

Gremlins reboot/sequel moving forward?

Lets add this one to the rumor category for now.

It seems that Warner Bros. is in talks with Stephen Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment to get the ball rolling on a new Gremlins movie.  some insiders are claiming that this time there may actually be progress and, if negotiations are successful, may drop the film into pre-production.

Screenwriter of the original Gremlins, Chris Columbus has said this about revisiting the Gremlins universe:

“It would be fun to go back and revisit. Something like Gremlins, which is a movie I really like, I think it’s impossible to recreate in a CGI environment. I think it will inevitably lose some of its charm. Those are edgy Muppets in a sense and you don’t want to lose that sense of anarchy that those gremlins had, because behind the scenes are 25 puppeteers making them to come to life.”

Time will tell if this actually pans out and we get to revisit the cuteness of Gizmo.  I just hope that if they go forward they do not go the CG route.  I want my Gremlins as puppets, not computer generated animations.  They need to feel real to be effective and CG just won’t cut it.

What say you?

    • I love both of the Gremlins movies, and would love to have another one. Much like the long discussed Ghostbusters sequel. I would be to both in a flash. They would just have to do it right and have the original creators involved.
