BIZZAM!! Picks of the Week

BIZZAM!! Picks of the Week- March 19 – March 26, 2013

Welcome, one and all, to this weeks edition of BIZZAM!!  Picks of the Week, where I run down the new Blu-Ray releases that will be competing for your hard earned dollars this week.  And, boy howdy, do we have some for you this week.  While it’s not a heavy week, we are looking at 2 Best Picture nominees and a lil feller with hairy feet.  So, without further ado, let us start this party.

Lil feller with hairy feet pick:  The Hobbit: AN Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit bluI really, really liked The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, even though a lot of people didn’t like it as much as the LOTR trilogy.  Have a look at my review here.  I think a lot of people couldn’t grasp the humor in this one, but the story is a bit more lighthearted than the tale in LOTR and lends itself to humor, much as the original novel did.  If you  haven’t seen it, and were planning on holding out for the extended cut of the film which will be released later this year, there are a couple of promotions for this release that you should be aware of.  First, if you buy the film and order a Papa John’s pizza, you can get a $3.00 rebate by mail.  Just go to the Papa John’s website and follow the instructions.  Second, the Ultraviolet code inside the package will be your ticket to joining a live event with Peter Jackson at  The event is scheduled for March 24, 2013 at 3 PM Eastern time/Noon Pacific.  There will be new footage of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, as well as a Q & A session with Mr. Jackson.  To me, those perks are enough to pick this release up.  Well, even without the perks I would pick it up cause I really, really dug the film.

Best Picture nominee #1: Zero Dark Thirty

Zero Dark Thirty blu

I have yet to see this film, even though I really, really wanted to when it released wide in January.  Just never had the time, which is always an issue when working 2 jobs and having a two and a half year old.  Now that it is releasing on Blu-Ray, I will have a chance to catch up.  While I wasn’t a fan of directory Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, I have liked some of her previous work including Strange Days and one of the best vampire films ever made, Near Dark.

Best Picture nominee # 2: Les Miserables

Les Miserables blu

Our second Best Picture nominee actually releases on March 22, 2013.  Of course, it must be a non-Tuesday release that makes things difficult for those of us who work in the field.  How terribly surprising.  As for the film, I like most of the cast, just know nothing about the musical upon which this is based or anything other than there is a lot of singing in it.  Sure, I find myself curious about this film, but not curious enough to actually pick it up at full price.  Maybe when it’s in the $8 bin at Walmart or Best Buy I might consider purchasing it.  Maybe.  Sure, it was nominated for Best Picture, but a good film that nomination does not make.  I have been disappointed by a lot of Oscar winners in the past (I’m looking at you, The English Patient).

Well, folks, that’s about all for this week.  Three high profile releases and very little filler.  Two I am personally picking up and one I’m not.  Don’t forget to click through and purchase one or more of these from Amazon if you’re interested in helping this site and column out.

  4. I’m really enjoying the design and layout of your
website. It’s a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more enjoyable for me to come here
and visit more often. Did you hire out a designer to create your theme?
    Fantastic work!
