BIZZAM!! Picks of the Week

UPDATE!!-BIZZAM!! Picks of the Week: April 16 and April 23

The release date for Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes was pushed back last minute to June 25, 2013.  DAMMIT!!

Welcome to this week’s edition of Bizzam!! Picks of the Week.  Some of you may have noticed that I missed last weeks article.  I had a busy week in the real world and just didn’t have time to get it put together.  Fear not, dear readers, I am including last weeks releases here along with the current ones.  There’s a lot of good stuff, so without further ado, let’s dive right in!

Tarantino western pick: Django Unchained

Django Unchained bluAh, yes, the new film from Quentin Tarantino.  I have heard great things about this film, and I love westerns, but I am not sure how much I really want to see this.  I don’t think as highly of Tarantino as a lot of my peers.  I absolutely loved the mans work until Inglorious Basterds.  That film broke the spell he had over me.  I know I will see this eventually, but for now, this is on the back burner for.

Emelio Estevez pick: Repo Men (Criterion Collection)

Repo Man Criterion blu

An early Emelio Estevez film concerning punk rock, repossession of cars, and alien bodies in the trunk of one of those cars?  Sign me up!  I have never seen this film, but have heard of it extensively.  Word is that it is really good and worth checking out.  It is nice to see Criterion releasing some films that people have heard of as opposed to their normal glut of obscure ‘classics’.  If I can find this for a reasonable price, I will probably pick it up and check it out.  Have you seen it?  Is it worth it?  Let me know in the comments.

Comic book mob pick: Gangster Squad

Gangster Squad blu

I thought this looked pretty cool from the trailers.  Word on it, though, is that it is not all that great.  Look at the cast, though.  Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and Sean Penn.  Even if the movie isn’t that great, it deserves to be seen because of that cast.  I will check it out eventually, but it is not high on my list of priorities.

Christopher Lambert pick: Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes

Greystoke blu

I am an unabashed fan of Christopher Lambert.  I don’t care what anyone says, he is super-mega-awesome-sauce.  This film is one of the reasons why he can do anything and remain super-mega-awesome-sauce.  Well, this and the original Highlander.  And Mortal Kombat.  And, well, everything.  The man is a gift to humankind!  In all seriousness, this is a wonderful film that I am super excited is finally getting a Blu-Ray release.  If you haven’t seen it and like historical dramas, you just might dig this film.

Dramatic pick #1:  The Impossible

The Impossible blu

I’m not 100% sold on this film.  While the trailers looked pretty good, I get the feeling that this is an emotional manipulation film.  While I can appreciate a film that conjures up an emotional reaction in it’s audience, I cannot stand a film that is made for that reaction.  You can usually tell when a film is consciously trying hard for that response.  I may check this out eventually, as I do like Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts, but it is not high on my priority list.

Dramatic pick #2: Promised Land

Promised Land bluI know nothing about this film other than it’s about oil fraking.  It has Matt Damon in it, though, so that’s a good sign.  It is also released through Focus Features and they have a pretty good track record of releasing good to great films.  If you have seen it, let me know in the comments if it’s worth checking out.

3D pick: Jurassic Park 3D

Jurassic Park 3D blu

Yep, the regular Blu-Ray’s for Jurassic Park released a couple weeks ago.  Yep, this 3D-ified version of Jurassic Park is still playing in some theaters.  And starting on Tuesday, you can watch it in your own living room in 3D.  I haven’t managed to catch the 3D-ified version in the theater and I don’t own a 3D TV (yet), but I know there are some of you out there.  If you pick this up, let me know how it is.  I am very curious.  I know the film is great, just curious about the 3D.

Norwegian folk lore pick:  Thale

Thale blu

I saw the trailer for this awhile back and it had me intrigued.  I’m glad it is finally getting a proper US Blu-Ray release this week.  I am really looking forward to this one.  Have a look at the trailer here:

I will be picking this one up, for sure.

Well, that’s it for this week, kiddies.  There’s a lot of good stuff in here, so if you are interested in anything, click through the covers to head to Amazon to pick them up.  A small percentage comes back to the site for the running of this weekly article and the site in general.  I’ll be back next week with the best of the best Blu-Ray releases!
