What!? They're remaking my first film!? Say it ain't so!!

What!? They’re remaking my first film!? Say it ain’t so!!

Variety is reporting that James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin) is going to helm the remake of Bloodsport, Jean-Claude van Damme’s 1988 breakout film.  Variety says:

The new film, which has not been cast, will explore the life of 21st century mercenaries as they collide with the underground world of Brazilian Vale Tudo fighting.

The script, written by “Taken” scribe Robert Mark Kamen and based on a story developed by Kamen and Phillip Noyce, will be rewritten by Craig Rosenberg under McTeigue’s supervision.

Word is that van Damme is not involved in the remake in any way.

Honestly, I can’t find myself hating this idea.  Nothing they do in a remake can in any way dilute the original, so I feel there will be no harm, no foul in this.  While McTeigue is hit and miss (V for Vendetta was brilliant, I liked Ninja Assassin a lot, but The Raven was pretty terrible), I feel that he will be able to do justice to this.  If there is anything he can do well, it is action scenes.  As long as he doesn’t go all CG with the fights like in Ninja Assassin, we should be awesome here.

No word on release date, but I will keep you posted.
