So we all knew that J. J. Abrams probably wouldn’t be returning to helm the next Star Trek film. Obviously, the Star Wars directing gig is going to get in the way of Star Trek. Now Latino Review is reporting that Jon M. Chu (G. I. Joe: Retaliation, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never) is the frontrunner for the for the directing job.
While I cannot comment at all on his directing abilities, seeing as I have not seen a single film he has directed, I can’t help but question this decision. His directing choices so far, other than the two mentioned, have been Step Up Revolution and Step Up 2: The Streets. This does not instill confidence. While he may have proven his directing chops with G. I. Joe: Retaliation, I’ll never know since I refuse to watch anything with my arch nemesis Channing Tatum in it.
I just can’t help like the decision in choosing Chu is motivated more by the cost associated than actually hiring a talented director. It also seems like a huge step down from J. J. Abrams. Don’t get me wrong, these are just gut reactions to the news. He may be a great director, I just cannot say for sure. What do you guys think of this news?
