So, here we have the first trailer for the remake of RoboCop and I’m kind of torn on this. While it is a remake of the original 1987 Paul Verhoeven masterpiece, it only slightly resembles that film. Yes, a dude is almost killed and put into a robot. The similarities end there. So I’m torn. This looks pretty cool, but it should have been a sequel or a reboot instead of a remake. I think going in as a remake is really going to hurt this.
The original film is much loved in the geek community. In fact, it was my favorite movie for years. I’ve probably seen the original 50 times, and that’s not exaggeration. Will this film be good? I hope so. Have a look at the trailer here:
I like the look of Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy and I like the look of the suit, prior to the black one. It definitely feels like the original suit. Instead of the scathing social commentary of the original film, this looks to be examining the the roles of man vs. machine, and that could be an interesting way to go with the material. It could also backfire terribly. I am keeping my fingers crossed, even though I don’t have high hopes.
RoboCop opens on February 7, 2014.
