Evil Dead helmer to tackle Dante’s Inferno!

dante's infernoFede Alvarez made quite a splash earlier this year with his wonderfully twisted remake of Evil Dead (read my review here).  Well, he’s hopping back into the horror genre, with a sprinkling of action, for his next project, EA’s Dante’s Inferno, a film adaptation of the video game.

Deadline is reporting that Alvarez is currently in talks to helm the project.  Deadline had this to say about the story of the project:

The protagonist, Dante Aligheri is a knight who with the help of the poet Virgil ventures into the nine rings of hell to rescue his beloved Beatrice. In the process, he becomes an unwitting pawn in an ancient war between heaven and hell.

I have played the game, but it has been quite a while.  Honestly, I cannot remember if that description is accurate or not.  Coming from Deadline, though, I have to assume it is.  They are pretty good about their stories.  I did like the game and have been a little disheartened by the fact we haven’t received another in the series.

If you want my opinion, I think if they can lock down Alvarez, this movie will be something.  The game was a hard M rated title and was very graphic.  Alvarez has proven that he can handle the gore, and it will be interesting to see what he can do with a little action, if they go that route.  I can see this as being a straight up horror film, though, without the action elements that had to drive the gameplay.

More information as it becomes available.  Stay tuned!
