Deadline is reporting that Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Doomsday, Centurion) will direct the English language adaptation of the Norwegian film, Trollhunter. You can read my review for Trollhunter here. Marshall will begin filming in early 2014 while there’s still snow on the ground in the locations they are going to shoot.
While Marshall hasn’t directed a feature film since 2010’s Centurion, he hasn’t been resting on his laurels. He has directed a couple of episodes of HBO’s Game of Thrones, including the episode “Blackwater” which has to be seen to be believed. It is one of the most impressive pieces of battle on the small screen. He is currently shooting the biggest episode of Season four, and will transition immediately to Trollhunter.
I thoroughly enjoyed the original Norwegian film. When it was originally announced that Christopher Columbus’s 1492 Productions had purchased the rights to the remake, I rolled my eyes. The assumption was the Columbus would direct. While he has made films I enjoy (The Goonies, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone), I didn’t feel he was the right man to make this film. With the announcement of Marshall taking over, I think we can all rest a lot easier. Marshall is not intimidated by edgy fare and will manage to bring the edginess of the material along with some quirky British humor to the proceedings. (I hope.)
