‘The Conjuring’ getting a prequel and a sequel

ConjuringThe Conjuring released this last summer in theaters and made super-bank.  It recently released on Blu-Ray and made even more super-bank.  So, it should come as no surprise that there is going to be a sequel.  In fact, we knew that Warner Bros. and New Line were fast tracking a sequel before the film was even out of theaters.  Here is what Bloody Disgusting says via Ain’t it Cool News about the sequel:

occurs in the late ’70s and centers on two sisters in Enfield, England, who were allegedly possessed. Warren said she personally saw them levitate and even saw one of the sister dematerialize in front of her only to be found 20 minutes later stuffed into an oversized fuse box, contorted in such an unnatural way that they couldn’t have replicated it if they tried. She also said that the demon spoke directly to her husband on many occasions. Warren cited this case as one of the most terrifying experiences of her career.

Ok, so that’s the old news that I couldn’t remember if I posted.  Here is the new news.

Via Bloody DisgustingThe Conjuring‘s director of photography, John R. Leonetti is going to be directing the prequel film based on the doll Annabelle seen in the first film.  There is not a lot more information in their article, but it does seem that the film is looking to begin filming in the spring of 2014.  The Conjuring 2 and Annabelle will both be filming concurrently, it seems.

So, it looks like there will be a lot more The Conjuring horror on it’s way.  So, is this good or bad?  Honestly, I really don’t think this is a good idea.  I loved the first film (read my review here) but James Wan, the director, has moved on to Fast and Furious 7 and has stated that he is done with horror (click here for my editorial on the subject).  He is a master when it comes to the haunted house-style of horror filmmaking and I cannot think of any other director who could step in and get the same results.  As it sits, be prepared for subpar haunted house horror films spun off from a great film . . .Ah, yes, I see shades of Saw and Paranormal Activity coming . . .Uh-oh . . .
