So, honestly, I am seeing nothing in these RoboCop remake trailers to make me even remotely interested in seeing this. It looks to be on par with the dreadful RoboCop 3 (that’s the one where he flies and wasn’t Peter Weller). They are doing too much with the character. Seriously? Jumping off buildings? Riding a motorcycle? There was something about the slow, pondering movements in Verhoeven’s film that brought a sense of terror to the big guy that is just lost when he moves so damned fast. Much like Jason in the Friday the 13th series, when you speed him up, you lose something. (Ok, it actually kind of worked in the Friday the 13th reboot. He just wasn’t as scary, though. More violent, yes. Scary, no.)
I know a lot of people talk about the social connotations in the original RoboCop which seems to be lost here, but the slow, jerky, ROBOTIC movements were terrifying for the criminals and that seems to be lost here. Especially when he is fighting more robots. . . Well, take a look at the trailer here. Let me know what you think in the comments.
RoboCop opens on February 12, 2014. While I haven’t been sold on the trailers, the film has a helluva cast. Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, and Jackie Earl Haley. Joel Kinnaman stars as Alex Murphy/RoboCop. Hopefully, the cast can save this one. . .
