BIZZAM!! Picks of 2013: Part 1- The Films!!

Well, here it is.  The end of 2013.  That means that every website devoted to gaming, music and movies is dropping their Top Ten lists of the year.  Well, I am not doing a Top Ten list for all of these categories.  The reasoning?  I am a simple man who does not get to see, hear, and play everything that releases.  I work two jobs and have a three year old.  In other words, I simply do not have time to see, hear, or play everything I want to.  In fact, I cannot maintain this site as well as I’d like.  I’m sure you all understand.

So, basically, here is what I am going to do.  I am going to post my favorite film, game, and CD with a runner-up or two.  Just keep in mind, these are my favorites of what I have seen.  I have missed more than I have seen, so this is by no means comprehensive.  These are just the favorites of what I had the pleasure of imbibing.  Let’s get on with it, shall we?

BIZZAM!! Movie Pick of the Year!!

gravity-movie-posterBy far one of the best films I have ever seen, hands down.  Alfonso Cuaron has crafted a film of such staggering power that will astonish and terrify you.  I have never wanted to be an astronaut less than after this film.  Read my review here.

The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug posterWhile The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug doesn’t reach the dizzying heights of The Two Towers, it is still a fantastic, rollicking adventure film that drops a lot of the silly humor from the first film.  Read my review here.

Honorable Mention

Iron Man 3 poster 2This is that rare film that surpasses all that has come before by focusing on the man and not the armor.  By acknowledging that the events of The Avengers damaged Tony Stark, they are able to craft a big budget, personal journey.  Wonderful film.  Read my review here.

Honorable, Honorable Mention

Star Trek Into Darkness posterA lot of Star Trek fans didn’t like this one.  They are all stupid.  While I can understand some of their gripes, Benedict Cumberbatch delivered a massively powerful performance as Khan.  Don’t let the haters fool you.  This is a magnificent film, with magnificent performances by Peter Weller and Benedict Cumberbatch.  Read my review here.

Honorable, Honorable, Honorable Mention

The Conjuring posterI liked this movie a lot.  Honestly, I feel that James Wan has become a master of the haunted house genre of horror films. and it is a terrible loss to horror for him to give it up.  He has that unique voice that also translates to big box office; a rarity for horror.  While this film didn’t terrify me like Sinister did last year, it did get under my skin a bit and creep me out.  Read my review here.

Dishonorable Mention

Man of Steel poster 4I didn’t hate this movie.  Just the second half.  The reason this film infuriates me so much is how good the first half is.  Honestly, the first half of the film is brilliant.  Then you get to the second half.  When you get there, it’s like Zack Snyder and David Goyer threw out their intelligence and went the Michael Bay ‘bigger is better explosions’ route.  I have wasted enough words on this film.  If you want to dig deeper into my thoughts, click this for my review.  Then click here for what I liked.  And here I ravage the film with what I didn’t like.

So, there you have it.  My picks for films of the year.  Obviously, there are no indie films in there.  Honestly, I just don’t have time to watch all of them.  Of the films I have seen, these are what I remember and stand out in my mind.
