Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (2013) Blu-Ray review (mildly NSFW)

Bad Grandpa bluAfter his wife dies and his daughter goes to jail, Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville) must take his grandson (Jackson Nicoll) to his biological father.

The fourth film in the Jackass film series, Bad Grandpa is another hidden camera/stunt style film, this time with a bare-bones plot to drive the proceedings.  If you go in expecting gross out comedy, physical stunts, and extremely inappropriate behavior involving an old man and a 10 year old, you will not be disappointed.  Ok, I just re-read that last sentence and may have given you the wrong impression.   Bad Grandpa is one of the funniest films of the year, hands down.   The inappropriate behavior will be described in the rest of the review.

If you have seen any of the Jackass films, you basically know what you are getting in to here.  Instead of horse semen swilling competitions and toy cars up the butt, we get old man hanging balls slapping on the butt of a black male stripper, drinking of bingo blotters, and the dressing up of a 10 year old boy as a little girl to enter a beauty pageant.  What happens at that beauty pageant is the stuff of legend.  I will not attempt to describe it, but you can see a bit of it in the trailer below.  And it is as funny in the film as it seems it will be in the trailer.

JACKASS PRESENTS: BAD GRANDPAThe difference between this and the other films in the Jackass series is the inclusion of a bare bones plot.  Essentially, it is road trip setup which gives the team a chance to set up their stunts in other towns along the way.  This time, though, the entire film hinges on Johnny Knoxville’s old man character, Irving Zisman.  While I had doubts about the amount of funny to be gleaned from this character, they easily filled one film with the pranks and stunts revolving around this old man.

The makeup effects used to turn Johnny Knoxville into Irving Zisman are nothing short of amazing.  This is hands down the best old age makeup I have ever seen on film.  There is a reason this film is nominated for the Best Makeup Academy Award.

While I easily call this one of the funniest films of the year, it is not as funny as the other films in the series.  By this fourth film, most of the shock value has worn off.  The stunts are in service to the plot (sort of), so you don’t get some of the more outlandish stunts the Jackass crew have performed.  Honestly, this film seems a little bit tame compared to their other offerings.   Of course, the explosive poop in the restaurant had me laughing so hard I had to pause the movie.  Either you like this kind of film or you don’t, and nothing I say in this review is going to change your mind.

You know going into this film whether you are going to like it or not.  If you like this sort of film, I can easily recommend it to you.  It is pretty damned funny.  Just don’t expect the glorious heights of the other films in the series and don’t expect much out of the story.
